Learn how to explain The Rank Game On-the-Go quickly and clearly. This guide breaks down the setup and rules so new players can start ranking in minutes.

Quick answer

Grab the deck, read the first topic card aloud, and have each player rank their top three from the options. That's the core loop—explain it in under one minute, then play a practice round.

Why this version is easier to teach

The Rank Game On-the-Go: Greatest Hits (Multi-Color Pack) uses 54 curated topic cards from 18 different decks. Because the topics are already pre-selected for variety and fun, you don't need to explain expansions or pack compatibility. New players just need to know one thing: rank your choices.

The compact size also makes it ideal for passing around a table or playing in a car. There's no board, no timer, and no scoring gimmick—just conversation and quick decisions.

Common teaching pitfalls to avoid

Don't explain every rule upfront. New players learn best by doing. If you start with edge cases like ties or repeated topics, you'll lose their attention. Stick to the basic flow and add clarifications only when they come up.

Also avoid treating the ranking order as a test. The game is about opinions, not correct answers. Emphasize that there's no wrong choice—just personal preference.

Teach The Rank Game On-the-Go in 5 Steps

Step 1: Hand out the deck and explain the goal: Give each player a few cards from the deck, or place the stack in the center. Say: 'We take turns reading a topic card. Everyone ranks their top three options from that card. The goal is to share your reasoning and see where you agree or disagree.' Common mistake: players think they need to memorize all cards. Reassure them that they only see one topic at a time.
Step 2: Read the first topic card aloud: Pick a player to draw the top card and read it out. For example, 'Rank these three vacation destinations: beach, mountains, city.' Keep the card visible so everyone can refer to the options. If the group is large, have the reader repeat the three options twice. This prevents confusion before anyone has to decide.
Step 3: Each player silently ranks their top three: Give everyone 10–15 seconds to write or mentally note their ranking. No talking during this step. The silence builds anticipation and prevents groupthink. Common mistake: players start discussing before everyone has decided. Enforce the quiet moment to keep the reveal surprising.
Step 4: Reveal and discuss rankings: Go around the table and have each player share their number one pick first, then their full ranking. Encourage brief explanations like 'I chose beach because I love swimming' rather than just naming the option. If someone's ranking is wildly different from the group, that's the most interesting conversation starter. Lean into the disagreement.
Step 5: Rotate to the next player and card: After discussion naturally winds down (usually 1–2 minutes), the next player draws a new card and repeats from Step 2. Continue until everyone has had a turn or you run out of time. Checkpoint: if the group is still debating, skip to the next card and come back later. The game is flexible—no strict turn timer needed.
